Bucketworks Core Members, GroupCard announces their acquisition -

"We’re excited to announce that GroupCard has been acquired by InComm.  Helping people come together to give their friends and family a meaningful gift has always been an important part of GroupCard. We created GroupCard with the basic principle that social expression and group gifting would be a major growth driver for the online prepaid business. Teaming with InComm will help us achieve an even broader social payments strategy in partnership with the leading product brands and retailers worldwide."

We're very excited for and proud of the GroupCard guys! Congratulations! GroupCard got their start as an online greeting card company, which developed into a pioneering Facebook App, they're a two time winner of the prestigious fbFund program, and were invited last summer to participate in the fbFund REV incubator program at the Facebook offices in Palo Alto. They also recently launched a socially enabled gifting program through Facebook.

One of the initiatives of The School Factory, Bucketworks' parent organization, is to incubate theatre companies, especially those conceived and run by young people. Our goal is not only to give high-school students practical, hands-on experience in running a business and producing theatre, but also to bring together students from all walks of life, in order to connect with and work with those who they might not otherwise have had the chance to meet. We also provide mentoring relationships for those students with theatre practitioners, so they have helping hands along the way of developing their artistic vision.

This past summer, The World's Stage Theatre Company was born. Twelve high-school students from around the Milwaukee area created an original piece called A LITTLE MORE THAN KIN, which wove together scenes and monologues from Shakespeare in a "play-within-a-play" frame written by one of the group members. This summer, The World's Stage will be back with at least two productions. They'll be using Bucketworks to meet, plan, and rehearse, and then, thanks to our friends and colleagues at In Tandem Theatre, they'll perform their work at one of the most beautiful new theatre venues in Milwaukee.

Keep an eye on this blog for further information as their plans for this summer come together. If...

We're back for a second great unconference-style event: StartupAccelerator 2!

Last year's event brought together 100 people to share their experience and skills in starting up a business, program, or social enterprise. Not like a regular conference where you sit-and-get, this event is one you create with your fellow attendees. You propose the sessions. You participate in the conversation. You build your network! Bring your startup idea, concept, or business, and get ready to learn tools and techniques with your peers--and share what you've learned.

Day 9 just ended. 9 days of being at Bucketworks. It has been *wonderful*.

I am working with smart people, talented people, on interesting projects that combine the best in community development, social technologies, and future thinking. I am proud of the work I share with Patrick, Jenn, Dan, Kevin, Sharon, Oleg, George, Tegan, and other members of the Bucket Brigade and the Bucketworks team. And our new space is beautiful!

It gets better. Nearby--also making, building, creating--are the three members of Groupcard, Bob, Matt, and Jonathan--who have their own energy and dynamic, launching and relaunching and growing their 2-year old tech startup. Every time I pass them, running up the stairs to my desk, I hear the snippets of ideation that are music to my ears. And now, Matt Gauger is working alongside them! This group is building connections between commerce, community, and technology, too.

On a sunny Valentine's Day Sunday, Bucketworks volunteer Ron Bean, 5 young people, 2 board members, and other volunteers (including myself) moved ArtWorks for Milwaukee into the new Bucketworks space.

We'd like to give them a warm Bucketworks welcome!

ArtWorks's mission and goals are aligned with our own: "To prepare underserved teens to enter Milwaukee’s workforce by utilizing the arts as a method to teach employability skills."

We are proud to become partners in our new space.
